Building an Inclusive Environment Requires Effort
Building an inclusive environment requires more than just celebrating diversity events each month. In fact, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. However, on a positive note, it’s a start. Educating others about events with which they may not be familiar creates awareness and curiosity.
The Importance of Celebrating Diversity
As human beings, we are all unique, and we each bring something different to the table in the workplace. It is normal to stick to “what we know” or “our own truth,” but education and vulnerability is necessary to open doors, grow teams, and create positive organizational cultures.
Black History Month 2024
From February 1st until March 1st, we celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans in the United States. Negro History Week, initiated by Carter G. Woodson, was observed for the first time on February 7, 1926.
The Importance of Recognizing and Celebrating Juneteenth
Juneteenth was installed as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, by the President of the United States, Joe Biden. Each year, June 19th will be recognized as Juneteenth – Monday, June 19th, in 2023. Juneteenth is the American holiday where we celebrate the end of enslavement in the United States.
June is Pride Month!
In most places, Pride Month is celebrated in June each year, in commemoration of its roots in the Stonewall Riots of June 1969. For anyone who does not know the history, “The Stonewall Riots, also called the Stonewall Uprising, began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City.
Black History Month
Black History Month is a month-long celebration recognizing the contributions of Black people in the United Sates. It evolved from “Negro History Week,” which Carter G. Woodson started in 1926. In 1976, Negro History Week became Black History Month when Gerald Ford extended the recognition of black people throughout the nation for their overlooked accomplishments.
How Will You Retain Your Talent in 2023?
It’s difficult enough to recruit in today’s climate, but retaining employees is even more difficult. The number one factor that employers should be focused on is the employee experience, specifically in the areas of recruiting and onboarding, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and growth and development.
